Using the ‘Ready’ Phase to build a strategic reporting foundation

Nordic Leisure Travel Group (NLTG) is the largest tour operator in the Nordics, with a significant role in shaping the region’s travel industry. As reporting demands grow more complex, NLTG were eager to pilot Simple Revolution’s ‘Ready’ phase of The New Reporting Playbook – a structured approach to turning compliance-driven reporting into a strategic business tool.

The pilot was designed to establish a clear baseline for NLTG’s reporting process, while exploring ways to engage stakeholders and get greater value from existing efforts.

Turning the CSRD pause into a strategic opportunity

With CSRD implementation paused until 2026, NLTG saw the moment as a chance to strengthen its reporting approach. The team already produced reports rich in data and on-the-ground stories that demonstrated the depth of sustainability work across the business. Yet their reach was limited: few stakeholders engaged with them, and the significant effort required wasn’t fully translating into strategic value. With a clear ambition to lead on sustainability within the travel industry, NLTG recognised the opportunity to amplify its communication, connecting more powerfully with employees, customers and investors.

Laying the groundwork for smarter reporting

The Ready phase focused on two core activities:

1. Self-assessment and recommendations

NLTG benchmarked its reporting process against best practice through a structured self-assessment. Simple Revolution analysed the results, drawing on workshop discussions and a review of the latest sustainability report. The resulting recommendations outlined how NLTG could:

  • Clarify ownership of key data points, particularly in social and governance disclosures.
  • Prepare for CSRD/ESRS alignment by addressing the double materiality assessment (DMA), gap analysis, and impact, risk and opportunity (IRO) management.
  • Shift from a compliance mindset to one that uses reporting for brand building, employee engagement, and stakeholder trust.

2. Stakeholder survey

To ensure planning was grounded in evidence, NLTG ran a survey with employees, a key audience, to assess how informed and engaged they felt on sustainability. These insights will be used to shape future reporting, and will feature as a case story in NLTG’s next sustainability report. Alongside these activities, Simple Revolution helped NLTG identify new opportunities for stakeholder engagement, from using its website to internal channels, making report content more accessible and meaningful.

A clear roadmap and a stronger story

The pilot of the ready phase delivered three clear outcomes:

  1. A baseline strategy – NLTG now has a documented starting point, with clarity on strengths, weaknesses and priority actions for the next reporting cycle.
  2. Actionable insights – to help NLTG focus their efforts to match the result of their Double Materiality Assessment, both from a compliance and an editorial perspective.
  3. A roadmap for value creation beyond compliance – the recommendations give NLTG a pathway to use reporting as a brand and engagement tool, helping to strengthen company culture, attract talent and shape the sustainability conversation in the Nordic travel sector.

Words from our client

“Simple Revolution know their stuff. They bring expertise that makes you feel safe in a complex regulatory space, and their Playbook is a great way to frame the entire reporting process – especially for medium-sized companies new to sustainability reporting who need structure, guidance and confidence.” Camilla Malmose, Nordic Leisure Travel Group

Words from our team

“So many companies are stuck in ‘same procedure as last year’ reporting, lacking the baseline and strategy needed to turn all the effort that goes into producing annual reports that actually create value – beyond compliance. The ‘Ready’ phase directly addresses this. And it’s incredibly rewarding to see how the approach has inspired a long-standing client like NLTG to transform their approach.” Nanette Hale, Simple Revolution
