We’ve all heard the pitch: “Face-to-face congresses are over. Why fly a team of 10 when we can reach 10,000 online for a fraction of the cost?”
It’s a compelling financial argument, but it fundamentally misunderstands the emerging value of live interaction in an AI-saturated world.
The recent controversy surrounding Tilly Norwood, the hyper-realistic AI-generated “actress,” is a perfect example of what we can do with AI but it’s not what audiences will necessarily want. Across the creative industries, actors and their unions are arguing that AI cannot replicate the depth, emotion, and “life experience” that audiences crave from a real human on screen or on stage.
So, I love the possibilities that AI is providing for me. It’s making me way more effective in many ways. But while AI is excellent for digital efficiency, trust is built on authenticity.
Your brand’s most critical asset isn’t efficiency; it’s trust. And trust demands human presence. So your next congress presence isn’t an expense. It’s an essential investment in your company’s credibility.
3 reasons why authentic in-person events will grow:
- The authenticity instinct: We’ve started to mistrust what we read online. It’s become an instinct that we’ve had to develop if we don’t want to be conned. Only a live session ensures that data is delivered by a real (human) expert. It also allows for an unscripted Q&A. For my congress clients, this means that you must ensure that you allow time for a good Q&A.
- Brand Sensory Experience: Online events are transactional; live events are immersive. The look, feel, and energy of your booth or symposium create a tangible memory that digital channels cannot replicate. The experience will drive a deeper emotional connection to your brand. People might not remember what was said at an event. But they will remember the feeling that you gave them.
- Real-Time, Trust-Building Dialogue: Watching a pre-recorded presentation is passive. Challenging a speaker, engaging in debate, or feeling the energy of a packed room is active. And it will confirm your audience’s belief in the transparency of your organisation.
The future of engagement isn’t in reducing your congress presence; it’s in amplifying its authenticity. Don’t just show up. Design your events to be an undeniably human, real-time experience that digital media simply cannot touch.
